70 years ago today

Then Capt. Chuck Yeager achieved a speed of Mach 1.06 over the Mojave desert in the Bell X-1 “Glamorous Glennis”.  Bell engineers used the .50 BMG bullet as the basis for the shape of the X-1.

Escacar Unicycle Gyroscopic Rocket Car

Carl H. Renner painted this “Escacar” for General Motors in 1945. The Escacar is described as a “Unicycle Gyroscopic Rocket Car.”

Like the painting of a commuter helicopter we looked at a few months ago, this image can be found in the Petersen Automotive Museum book, Driving Through Futures Past.

Heads-up for hydrocarbon heritage

Castrol racing livery ranks in my top favorite racing liveries of all time.  The old Gulf blue and orange is my number 1 with the others shuffling up and down as the mood hits me.  The Marlboro Ferraris, the John Player Specials, The Ramchargers, The Blue Max, the Hot Wheels Snake and Mongoose…OK I’ll shuffle off and be old now….

Savoia-Marchetti S.65 Schneider Racer




The unorthodox Savoia-Marchetti S.65 was intended to win the 1929 Schneider Trophy Race for Italy. Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed and took the life of Tommaso Dal Molin.

After the Italian team was defeated on its home turf at Venice, Italy in the 1927 Schneider Trophy Race, the Italian Ministero dell’Aeronautica (Air Ministry) sought to ensure victory for the 1929 race. The Ministero dell’Aeronautica instituted programs to enhance aircraft, engines, and pilot training leading up to the 1929 Schneider race. Early in 1929, the Ministero dell’Aeronautica requested racing aircraft designs from major manufacturers and encouraged unorthodox configurations.

Too much, too soon – the Bristol M.1C Monoplane

The Fokker scourge on the Western Front in the First World War had come and gone. The slaughter of the ‘innocents’ – principally the RFC’s ill-starred, over-stable, badly designed B.E.2 biplanes, in the ‘Fokker Scourge’- by the monoplane Fokker E.III Eindeckers, with their centrally-mounted, synchronized 7.92mm Spandau machine guns, had faded. The Royal Flying Corps needed better, faster ‘scouts’ as soon as possible, or it would cede the initiative to the German Luftstrietkraft permanently. Blind courage, as shown by the early British aviators, could only do so much. However, a possible solution was on the way.

The Train of Tomorrow
